It often happens that new operas disappear from the stage after the first production. Three Sisters by Peter Eötvös, one of the most important modern European composers, has changed the view of modern opera as a disposable theater. In The Cambridge Guide to Opera of the 20th Century, musicologist Marvin Cook called The Three Sisters the last significant opera of the last century. Since 1998, she has withstood two dozen productions - and now she is coming to the Russian stage.

The libretto of The Three Sisters is written in Russian, and, unlike Chekhov's drama, the action in it develops non-linearly, dividing not into acts, but into "sequences" - in each of them the story is told from the point of view of one of the characters, Irina, Masha and Andrey. There is no choir in the opera, but two orchestras are occupied (in the pit and in the back of the stage) and 13 male soloists: the parts of the sisters and Natalia are written for countertenors. However, Eötvös also provided an option for mezzo-soprano - this particular version will be performed at the Ural Opera. Eminent New York director Christopher Alden has been invited to stage for the first time.

В Кембриджском путеводителе по опере ХХ века музыковед Мэрвин Кук назвал «Трёх сестёр» последней значительной оперой прошлого столетия. С 1998 года она выдержала два десятка постановок — и теперь приходит на российскую сцену.

Либретто «Трех сестер» написано на русском языке, и, в отличие от чеховской драмы, действие в нем развивается нелинейно, делясь не на акты, а на «последовательности» — в каждой из них история рассказана с точки зрения одного из персонажей, Ирины, Маши и Андрея. В опере нет хора, но заняты два оркестра (в яме и в глубине сцены) и 13 солистов-мужчин: партии сестер и Натальи написаны для контратеноров. Однако Этвёш также предусмотрел вариант для меццо-сопрано — именно эта редакция прозвучит в Урал Опере. Для постановки в театр впервые приглашен именитый нью-йоркский режиссер Кристофер Олден.
