Based on one of the most popular and best known Victorian farces, Cox & Box marked the beginning of an unparalleled career for its composer, Arthur Sullivan, in the field of comic opera.
This one-act operatic gem tells of two estranged brothers who, unknown to each other, share the same lodgings in a boarding house run by the unscrupulous Mrs Bouncer. This cleverly devised situation, however, comes to a head when both Cox and Box meet for the first time and require from Bouncer an explanation of why there is a stranger in their room. As both of them have receipts for rent Mrs Bouncer is required to do some very quick thinking but, in true Victorian fashion, everything is resolved in the most topsy-turvey manner.
This year Rockdale Opera Company will be presenting the complete newly-restored opera as opposed to the regularly performed ‘abridged’ Savoy version.
TRIAL BY JURY
Trial by Jury is a comic opera in one act, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W S Gilbert. It was first produced on 25 March 1875 at London’s Royalty Theatre, where it initially ran for 131 performance and was considered a hit – receiving critical praise.
Angelina is suing Edwin for “breach of promise”. The scene is set: an English Court of Law – an Usher who instructs the Jury to adjudicate without any bias – a public gallery of spectators, complete with the mother of the bride, who have already determined the outcome of the case –a defendant with a roving eye –a Judge who would rather be at his club – a broken-hearted Bride complete with attending bridesmaids – a lady barrister – and a surprising ending.
