Like no other work in the opera literature, »Tristan und Isolde« presents the love between two people in its most ecstatic form. Like no other composer before him, Richard Wagner follows the »instincts of the sounds« (to borrow a phrase from Arnold Schönberg) and evokes a permanent intoxication. In the staging by director Uwe Eric Laufenberg, however, it also becomes apparent that such an absolutely self-contained love like that between Tristan and Isolde cannot be reconciled with society.
Barbara Haveman and Marco Jentzsch will sing the title roles, and Catherine Foster and Andreas Schager will also be performing during the May Festival and in a number of other performances. René Pape will also take on the role of King Marke once at the May Festival.
