Tristan und Isolde reflects Wagner's revolutionary thinking, which is by no means free of contradictions and combines politics, art and individuality, like no other work. Opinions were divided at the premiere in 1865. Clara Schumann found the musical drama obscene and repugnant. The poet Charles Baudelaire loved its intoxicating effects. Thanks to the Tristan chord, endless melody and chromaticism that expands the harmonic boundaries, the work advanced to become a milestone in music history. Above all, however, Wagner achieved an unprecedented intensity of musical emotional expression. Its fascinating and at the same time irritating power can still be felt today.

Director Elisabeth Stöppler, whose Chemnitz production of Götterdämmerung was awarded the DER FAUST theater prize in 2019, deliberately contrasts Wagner's dream of the wondrous realm of the night with an aesthetic of realism, thus creating a field of tension. Her contemporary interpretation looks for the motives for Isolde's and Tristan's actions in concrete relationship constellations and in a history that shapes both.
