Keskaegsetest legendidest pärit Euroopa tuntumaid armastajapaare Tristan ja Isolde on inspireerinud kirjanikke, kunstnikke, teatri- ja filmiloojaid juba pea tuhat aastat. Iiri printsess Isolde ja kangelaslik rüütel Tristan tunnevad teineteise vastu maagilist külgetõmmet, kuid nende kohtumine toimub olukorras, kus Tristan on aidanud oma kasuisal, Cornwalli kuningal Markel alistada Isolde kodumaa ning tapnud naise kihlatu, olles ise selle käigus saanud ränga haava. Tristan laseb end varjunime all Isolde juurde viia, kuid Isolde tunneb ta ikkagi ära ning üritab vaenlast tappa, ent loobub kiiresti, sest armub mehesse. Tänuks paranemise eest vannub Tristan talle igavest truudust.

Tristan ei tunne end Isolde väärilisena ja läheb teda kosima hoopis kuningas Markele, nii saaks Isoldest Cornwalli ja Iirimaa ühendatud riigi kuninganna. Isolde näeb seda aga reetmisena ja nad otsustavad koos Tristaniga mürki juua. Plaanist kohutatud teenija Brangäne valab karikasse mürgi asemel armujooki ja nii on Tristan ja Isolde nüüdsest ühendatud armastusega, mis on tugevam kui surm.

Tristan and Isolde, Europe's best-known lovers from medieval legends, have inspired writers, artists, theater and film makers for almost a thousand years. The Irish princess Isolde and the heroic knight Tristan feel a magical attraction to each other, but their meeting takes place in a situation where Tristan has helped his stepfather, King Mark of Cornwall, to conquer Isolde's homeland and killed her fiancé, having himself been seriously wounded in the process. Tristan allows himself to be taken to Isolde under an alias, but Isolde still recognizes him and tries to kill the enemy, but quickly gives up because she falls in love with him. In gratitude for the healing, Tristan swears eternal loyalty to her.

Tristan doesn't feel worthy of Isolde and goes to propose to King Mark instead, so Isolde would become queen of the united kingdom of Cornwall and Ireland. However, Isolde sees this as a betrayal and they decide to drink poison with Tristan. Terrified by the plan, the servant Brangäne pours a love potion into the cup instead of poison, and so Tristan and Isolde are now united in a love stronger than death.

Wagner's love-struck opera, inspired by Arthur Schopenhauer's philosophy of pessimism, premiered in Munich in 1865. Opera director Liis Kolle made her debut at the Vanemuise theater in 2002 and now returns to stage a Wagner opera for the first time in the history of Vanemuise.
