Daniel Barenboim conducts Tristan und Isolde in a bold new production from Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov!

If there is one work that was crucial to Barenboim's conducting career, it has to be Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. From Bayreuth to Berlin to Milan and New York, the Argentinian conductor has been working for more than 35 years to unravel his secrets and to write a textbook on the subject. In the orchestra pit of the newly renovated State Opera and at the head of the Staatskapelle Berlin, he once again works magic.

Dmitri Tcherniakov, who is no stranger to having staged the work at the Mariinsky in 2005, addresses the psychological aspects of the drama and works to make the mythical lovers as approachable as possible. In doing so, he gives this work, probably the most fascinating of Wagner's works, a new realistic depth. Act III, which marks the tragic end of Tristan and Isolde's doomed love affair, captivates with its powerful simplicity, and the famous Liebestod, in which Isolde bids farewell to her dead lover, achieves an unparalleled level of emotionality and intensity. Although Tristan once beheaded her fiancé, the Irish king's daughter Isolde saved the life of the enemy king of Cornwall's nephew and fell in love with him. Tristan secretly reciprocates her love, but out of a sense of duty he now arranges for Isolde's forced marriage to King Marke. Deeply humiliated, she wants to end her life and take Tristan with her to her death. Since he wants to escape his feelings for Isolde, both voluntarily drink from an alleged death potion. Thinking they are close to death, they confess their forbidden love to each other. Tormented by unfulfilled longing and longing for each other, both have to go on living, but now they really want to be united in death...


Inspired by the philosophy of Schopenhauer, Richard Wagner adapted the medieval epic Tristan in the 1850s and created a music that brings the overpowering emotions and streams of thought of the protagonists to the fore far more than any other opera before it. In extreme concentration on the innermost parts of the actors, who are hardly active anymore, he helped his almost symphonic music to develop and develop independently. By means of pronounced chromaticism and highly advanced harmonies, as well as by strictly dispensing with formal caesuras, Wagner created highly erotic music, an "infinite melody" full of glowing tension. Just like the ever-growing, all-consuming longing of the two title characters, she pushes more and more painfully for dissolution (or redemption), which is hardly ever granted.

Obwohl Tristan einst ihren Verlobten enthauptete, hat die irische Königstochter Isolde dem Neffen des verfeindeten Königs von Cornwall das Leben gerettet und sich in ihn verliebt. Zwar erwidert Tristan insgeheim ihre Liebe, doch aus Pflichtgefühl betreibt er nun die Zwangsverheiratung Isoldes mit König Marke. Zutiefst gedemütigt will sie ihrem Leben ein Ende setzen und Tristan mit sich in den Tod reißen. Da er seinen Gefühlen für Isolde entkommen will, trinken beide freiwillig von einem vermeintlichen Todestrank. Sich dem Tode nahe wähnend gestehen sie einander ihre verbotene Liebe. Von unerfüllter Sehnsucht und Verlangen nach einander gequält müssen beide weiterleben, wünschen sich nun aber erst recht die Vereinigung im Tod herbei …


Inspiriert von der Philosophie Schopenhauers adaptierte Richard Wagner in den 1850er Jahren das mittelalterliche Tristan-Epos und schuf eine Musik, die die übermächtigen Emotionen und Gedankenströme der Protagonisten weit mehr in den Vordergrund rückt als jede andere Oper zuvor. In extremer Konzentration auf das Innerste der kaum noch handelnden Akteure verhalf er seiner beinah sinfonisch anmutenden Musik zu größter Entfaltung und Selbstständigkeit. Mittels ausgeprägter Chromatik und hoch avancierter Harmonik, sowie durch strikten Verzicht auf formale Zäsuren schuf Wagner eine hocherotische Musik, eine »unendliche Melodie« voll glühender Spannungen. Ebenso wie die stetig wachsende, alles verzehrende Sehnsucht der beiden Titelgestalten drängt sie immer schmerzlicher nach Auflösung (bzw. Erlösung), die kaum je gewährt wird.
