‘The Answer is Land’ is a poem that I came across a few years ago.
The poem is part of an artwork called Kiss From the Border by Jenni Laiti, Niillas Holmberg and Outi Piesku, where eight lines of poetry were placed along the Deanu river valley, on the border between Finland and Norway. The Kiss From the Border project caught my attention because it is political and activist art that is driven by love rather than anger.

Love and connection to nature, our surroundings and people are important to me, as I live in a Sámi village and society. I had an urge to create a dance and yoik experience where connection to the place (the land, nature) and togetherness are the main themes. That’s the starting point of this project.

The yoiks (Sámi traditional songs) are mountain yoiks and yoiks relating to nature. Some are from archives, some composed by Frode Fjellheim, one of the yoiks performer Sara Marielle and I have learned from an elder, and one of the yoiks is composed by me. It feels truly extraordinary that these yoiks, that come from all over Sápmi, are yoiked, heard and get a space in the public each time we meet an audience.

Often people ask me how they should define or look at my work: is it dance, is it a performance concert, theatre or what? In my opinion there is no need to define. Vástádus eana – The answer is land is its own.

La terra è la domanda, la risposta è la terra.

‘The Answer is Land’ è una poesia in cui mi sono imbattuta anni fa e che fa parte di Kiss From the Border, un’opera di Jenni Laiti, Niillas Holmberg e Outi Piesku, in cui otto righe del testo erano state collocate lungo la valle del fiume Deanu, al confine tra Finlandia e Norvegia. Questo progetto ha catturato la mia attenzione perché rappresenta un’arte politica e attivista guidata dall’amore e non dalla rabbia.

Per me, che vivo in un villaggio e in una società Sámi, l’amore e il legame con la natura, con ciò che ci circonda, con le persone, sono importanti. Ho sentito il bisogno di creare un’esperienza di danza e yoik (i canti tradizionali Sámi) in cui la connessione con il luogo (la terra, la natura) e la solidarietà fossero i temi principali. Questo è stato il punto di partenza del progetto.

Gli yoik sono canti di montagna e legati alla natura. Alcuni provengono da archivi, altri sono stati composti da Frode Fjellheim, uno lo abbiamo imparato Sara Marielle e io da un anziano e uno l’ho scritto io stessa. È davvero straordinario che questi yoik, che vengono da ogni parte della terra dei Sámi, vengano cantati, ascoltati e trovino spazio ogni volta che incontriamo un pubblico.

Spesso le persone mi chiedono come definire o con quali occhi guardare questo lavoro: è danza? è una performance? è musica? è teatro? è qualcos’altro? Per me non c’è bisogno di dare definizioni. Vástádus eana – The answer is land è ciò che è.
Basta lasciarsi trasportare, sentirlo e viverlo.
