Zigmars Liepiņš made his mark as a composer in the mid-1970s, and during this time an unfathomable variety of things have been created: there are poignant melodies and catchy pop songs, there are ballads and a touch of folk songs, there are witty parodies, we are captivated by motifs of longing and play, ambitious song cycles were born and instrumental pearls, we know and love Sigmar's operas, rock operas and musicals, the list of works includes soundtracks for intimate whispers and monumental canvases for the carol festival horizon.

The program of the 70th anniversary concert of Zigmars Liepins includes three masterpieces. The first of them is the Violin Concerto, which is dedicated to the composer's father and had its premiere performed by Paula Šūmanes, LNSO and the composer's son Jānis Liepiņš ten years ago. On October 17, together with the LNSO and Jānis Liepiņa, the brilliant and globally sought-after Kristīne Balanas will appear on the Opera stage.

The second masterpiece is the suite "Red Forest", the music of which is composed of the captivating, truly cinematic motifs composed for the popular series and which was premiered by Jānis Liepiņš at the 2022 "Grand Concert of Latvian Symphonic Music".

Finally, a new work - the grandiose "Mesa 2020", which was created during the first stage of the pandemic caused by C-19, when the composer and his closest people evacuated to the family seaside house in Gipka and felt the impulse to write a sacred masterpiece. The world at that time needed all possible help from the earth and higher powers, but when thinking in his music about the humanity overwhelmed by the crisis caused by the disease, the composer could not even imagine that in the year the Mass was performed, the world would have been engulfed by even greater horrors. This time we will hear the canonical text of the Mass in Latvian, and the three sacramental words of the prayer "Give us peace" at the end of the masterpiece, according to the composer's intention, will be heard in a clear five-fold silence, because this is the only way we can reach the core of our prayers.

Excellent forces have been chosen for the performance of the Mass under the skillful direction of Jānis Liepiņš. The organ part is of great importance in the work, and it is a pleasure that the unrepeatable organ star Iveta Apkalnas gave her consent. Polyphonic singing will be given by the State Academic Choir "Latvija", clerical moods will be given by the association of Gregorian chants Schola cantorum Rīga, music will also be performed by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and two wonderful solo voices will be Ilze Grēvele-Skaraine and Laura Grecka. Everything said suggests that we will not have heard such a Sigmars Liepinas yet.

Zigmars Liepiņš kā komponists spilgti pieteicās 70. gadu vidū, un pa šo laiku tapušas neaptverami daudzveidīgas lietas: ir smeldzes pilnas melodijas un pielīpošas popdziesmas, ir balādes un pieskāriens tautasdziesmām, vīd asprātīgas parodijas, mūs valdzina ilgošanās un spēlēšanās motīvi, dzimuši vērienīgi dziesmu cikli un instrumentālas pērles, mēs pazīstam un mīlam Zigmara operas, rokoperas un mūziklus, darbu sarakstā ir skaņurindas intīmam čukstam un monumentāli audekli dziesmusvētku horizontam.

Zigmara Liepiņa 70. jubilejas koncerta programmā iekļauti trīs lieldarbi. Pirmais no tiem ir Vijolkoncerts, kas veltīts komponista tēvam un pirmatskaņojumu piedzīvoja Paulas Šūmanes, LNSO un komponista dēla Jāņa Liepiņa interpretācijā pirms desmit gadiem. 17. oktobrī kopā ar LNSO un Jāni Liepiņu uz Operas skatuves kāps spožā un pasaulē pieprasītā Kristīne Balanas.

Otrais lieldarbs ir svīta “Sarkanais mežs”, kura mūzika veidota no populārajam seriālam komponētajiem valdzinošajiem, īsteni kinematogrāfiskajiem motīviem un kas pirmatskaņojumu Jāņa Liepiņa lasījumā piedzīvoja 2022. gada “Latviešu simfoniskās mūzikas lielkoncertā”.

Visubeidzot jaundarbs – grandiozā “Mesa 2020”, kas tapusi C-19 izraisītās pandēmijas pirmajā posmā, kad komponists ar saviem tuvākajiem cilvēkiem evakuējās uz ģimenes piejūras namu Ģipkā un sajuta impulsu rakstīt sakrālu lieldarbu. Pasaulei tobrīd bija nepieciešama visa iespējamā zemes un augstāku spēku palīdzību, bet, savā mūzikā domādams par slimības izraisītās krīzes pārņemto cilvēci, komponists pat iztēloties nevarēja, ka Mesas atskaņojuma gadā pasauli būs aptvērušas vēl lielākas šausmas. Mesas kanonisko tekstu šoreiz dzirdēsim latviešu valodā, un lieldarba izskaņā liktie trīs sakramentālie lūgšanas vārdi “Dodi mums mieru”, pēc komponista ieceres, izskanēs dzidrā pieckārtīgā klusinājumā, jo tikai tā mēs varam sasniegt mūsu lūgšanu kodolu.

Mesas atskaņojumam Jāņa Liepiņa prasmīgajā vadībā izvēlēti lieliski spēki. Darbā liela nozīme ir ērģeļu partijai, un prieks, ka piekrišanu devusi neatkārtojamā ērģeļspēles zvaigzne Iveta Apkalna. Daudzbalsīgu dziedāšanu dos Valsts akadēmiskais koris “Latvija”, klerikālas noskaņas piešķirs gregorisko dziedājumu apvienība Schola cantorum Rīga, muzicēs arī Latvijas Nacionālais simfoniskais orķestris, un divas brīnišķīgas solobalsis būs Ilze Grēvele-Skaraine un Laura Grecka. Viss teiktais liek domāt, ka šādu Zigmaru Liepiņu mēs vēl nebūsim dzirdējuši.
