Ústřední postavou našeho příběhu je Julie Reisserová (rozená Kühnelová), žena mnoha talentů, jež začala v roce 1919 studovat skladbu v Praze u Josefa Bohuslava Foerstera a svá studia dokončila v Paříži u Nadii Boulanger a Alberta Roussela. V rámci cyklu Ženy v hudbě přiblížíme jak její komorní tvorbu, tak skladby orchestrální, z nichž prakticky všechny zazní v novodobých světových premiérách v souvislosti s novou kritickou edicí Jeana-Paula C. Montagniera pro nakladatelství Ries & Erler. Orchestrální skladby Pastorale maritimo a Suita se pak vrátí na koncertní pódium po téměř devadesáti letech.

Dílu brněnské rodačky, skladatelky a dirigentky Vítězslavy Kaprálové se cyklus Musica non grata věnuje již od svých začátků. Na Zahajovacím koncertě cyklu Ženy v hudbě zazní její písňový cyklus na texty Vítězslava Nezvala Sbohem a šáteček v úpravě pro soprán a orchestr v podání Kateřiny Kněžíkové, Miniaturní suita, kterou napsala v polovině 30. let během svých studií v mistrovské třídě Vítězslava Nováka na Pražské konzervatoři, a orchestrální suita na motivy českých lidových písní a tanců s názvem Suita rustica, kterou zkomponovala v roce 1938 na objednávku londýnské pobočky nakladatelství Universal Edition.

Stejně jako Vítězslavě Kaprálové i chorvatské autorce Doře Pejačević nadělil osud velmi krátký život. Její tvorba, jež v sobě nese prvky pozdního romantismu, spadá do prvních dvaceti let 20. století. V té době mladá skladatelka velice často zajížděla do Čech, zejména ke své blízké přítelkyni Sidonii Nádherné z Borutína na zámek Vrchotovy Janovice. Důvodem mohl být i Sidoniin bratr Jan, který byl údajně Dořinou velkou láskou. Pejačević měla velmi vřelé vztahy s řadou českých umělců a interpretů, mezi jinými i s houslovým virtuózem Jaroslavem Kociánem, kterému věnovala několik svých skladeb.

„Stejně se vdáte a nikdy už nenapíšete ani notu!“ odůvodnil svůj verdikt ředitel Královské hudební akademie v Londýně poté, co zamítnul Elizabeth Maconchy udělit Mendelssohnovo stipendium. Nadaná irská dívka, žačka Ralpha Vaughana Williamse, ovšem prokázala svou houževnatost a v roce 1929 získala Octavia Travelling Scholarship, jenž jí umožnil odjet studovat do zahraničí. Vaughan Williams jí doporučil Vídeň, Maconchy však zvolila Prahu, která pro ni na počátku 30. let 20. století ztělesňovala jedno z nejprogresivnějších evropských hudebních center. V Praze se stala žačkou Karla Boleslava Jiráka a dostalo se jí zde i prvního veřejného uznání. Dne 19. března 1930 byl za řízení jejího učitele a s Erwinem Schulhoffem u klavíru proveden její Klavírní koncert. Skladatelka, která údajně prohlásila, že „nejlepší hudbou je pro ni vášnivý spor“, se vzepřela genderovým předsudkům doby a zařadila se mezi nejrespektovanější a nejvýraznější britské skladatele v historii tamní hudby. Jen pro zajímavost: v době, kdy byla na počátku třicátých let zesláblá bojem s tuberkulózou, byl jedním z jejích kopistů i mladičký Benjamin Britten! V roce 1987 byla jmenována Dámou britského impéria.

Koncert se uskutečňuje v rámci projektu Musica non grata, který oživuje umělecký odkaz skladatelek a skladatelů důležitých pro hudební život meziválečného Československa pronásledovaných nacionálním socialismem či jiným způsobem perzekvovaných z důvodů náboženských, rasových, politických nebo genderových. Mezinárodní hudební a kulturní projekt České republiky a Německa, iniciovaný a organizovaný Národním divadlem a finančně podporovaný

The central character of our story is Julie Reisserová (née Kühnelová), a woman of many talents who began studying composition in Prague with Josef Bohuslav Foerster in 1919 and completed her studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Albert Roussel. As part of the Women in Music cycle, we will present both her chamber work and orchestral compositions, practically all of which will be heard in modern world premieres in connection with the new critical edition by Jean-Paul C. Montagnier for the Ries & Erler publishing house. The orchestral compositions Pastorale maritimo and Suite will then return to the concert stage after almost ninety years.

The cycle Musica non grata has been dedicated to the work of the Brno native, composer and conductor Vítězslava Kaprálové since its inception. At the opening concert of the series Women in Music, her song cycle to the texts of Vítězslav Nezval Goodbye and a scarf arranged for soprano and orchestra performed by Kateřina Kněžíková, Miniature suite , which she wrote in the mid-1930s during her studies in the master class of Vítězslav Novák at the Prague Conservatory , and an orchestral suite based on motifs of Czech folk songs and dances called Suite rustica , which she composed in 1938 on the order of the London branch of the Universal Edition publishing house.

Like Vítězslava Kaprálova, Croatian author Dora Pejačević was also given a very short life by fate. Her work, which contains elements of late romanticism, belongs to the first twenty years of the 20th century. At that time, the young composer very often went to Bohemia, especially to her close friend Sidonia Nádherná from Borutín at the castle of Vrchotovy Janovice. The reason could also be Sidonia's brother Jan, who was allegedly Dořina's great love. Pejačević had very warm relations with a number of Czech artists and performers, including the violin virtuoso Jaroslav Kocián, to whom she dedicated several of her compositions.

"You'll get married anyway and never write a note again!" the director of the Royal Academy of Music in London justified his verdict after refusing to award Elizabeth Maconchy a Mendelssohn scholarship. A gifted Irish girl, a pupil of Ralph Vaughan Williams, she proved her tenacity, however, and in 1929 she won the Octavia Traveling Scholarship, which enabled her to go study abroad. Vaughan Williams recommended Vienna to her, but Maconchy chose Prague, which for her in the early 1930s embodied one of the most progressive European musical centers. In Prague, she became a pupil of Karel Boleslav Jirák and received her first public recognition here. On March 19, 1930, her Piano Concerto was performed under the direction of her teacher and with Erwin Schulhoff at the piano. The composer, who is said to have declared that "the best music to her is a passionate dispute", defied the gender prejudices of the time and became one of the most respected and distinctive British composers in the history of that country's music. Just for fun: when she was weakened by tuberculosis in the early 1930s, one of her copyists was a young Benjamin Britten! In 1987 she was made a Dame of the British Empire.
