14 sierpnia 1966 zabrzmiały pierwsze dźwięki festiwalu Wratislavia Cantans. Tak narodził się jeden z najważniejszych festiwali muzyki klasycznej w Polsce i w tej części Europy. Dziś, odtwarzając koncert sprzed pół wieku, rozpoczynamy świętowanie jubileuszu Wratislavii. Wrześniowy wieczór, kościół, dzieło oratoryjne sprzed stuleci (na przykład jedna z Pasji Bacha albo Mesjasz Händla) – to typowe skojarzenia z Wratislavią Cantans. Tymczasem początkowe festiwale odbywały się w sierpniu, trwały zaledwie kilka dni, a pierwszy koncert zorganizowano w Studiu Polskiego Radia. Na inauguracji nie zabrzmiała wielka forma wokalna, tylko zbiór utworów połączonych wspólnym mianownikiem śpiewu. Poza Magnificatem Zieleńskiego była to wyłącznie muzyka współczesna, wręcz „z ostatniej chwili”. Dziś publiczność często dziwi się obecności nowej muzyki na festiwalu, a przecież w manifeście programowym, tzw. Inwokacji, twórca Wratislavii, Andrzej Markowski, napisał: „Na tym Festiwalu wykonawcy powinni sięgać po mało znane lub dotychczas niewykonywane utwory polskich kompozytorów”.
Czego po nowym festiwalu oczekiwała publiczność lat sześćdziesiątych? Jak odbierała rzadko wówczas wykonywane utwory barokowe? Jak reagowała na awangardę w muzyce, którą fascynowali się ówcześni kompozytorzy? Czy słuchacze zakładali, że współczesne utwory z programu pierwszego koncertu przetrwają próbę czasu?
Po pół wieku wciąż – a może jeszcze chętniej niż w latach 60. – słuchamy doskonałego polskiego baroku. Hymn Magnificat ze zbioru Offertoria et communiones totius anni potwierdza klasę Mikołaja Zieleńskiego, który utwory wzorował na weneckim stylu polichóralnym. To właśnie w Wenecji wydawano drukiem dzieła polskiego kompozytora. Nota biograficzna Krzysztofa Pendereckiego w pierwszej książce programowej brzmiała skromnie: „Laureat szeregu nagród. Poza działalnością kompozytorską uprawia pedagogikę”. Jego Psalmy Dawida uhonorowano II nagrodą w pamiętnym konkursie Związku Kompozytorów Polskich w 1959 roku, kiedy to nikomu nieznany adiunkt Penderecki zgarnął trzy najwyższe laury. Muzykę z elementami atonalności i punktualizmu połączył z Psalmami w przekładzie Jana Kochanowskiego. Cinq rechants Oliviera Messiaena to popis możliwości ludzkiego głosu. Usłyszymy efekty orkiestrowe osiągnięte bez użycia ani jednego instrumentu – jedynie głosem. Messiaen jest też autorem tekstu utworu napisanego w przetworzonym języku francuskim oraz w języku wymyślonym – kompozytor dobrał sylaby ze względu na walory brzmieniowe.
Pozostałe utwory z pierwszego Wratislaviowego programu nie tak dobrze zniosły próbę czasu. La espero (Nadzieja), kompozycja Andrzeja Koszewskiego, która powstała zaledwie trzy lata przed festiwalem, została napisana do słów hymnu esperantystów ułożonego przez Ludwika Zamenhofa, twórcę języka esperanto. „Najmocniejszymi brawami [publiczność] nagrodziła Poèmes de Jean Tardieu Konstantego Regameya, zmuszając wykonawców do zabisowania ostatniej części utworu” – czytamy w recenzji z 1966 roku. Balet Wierchy Artura Malawskiego, dedykowany góralom Podhala, zwraca uwagę bardzo rozbudowaną sekcją perkusyjną.

On August 14, 1966, the first sounds of the Wratislavia Cantans festival sounded. This is how one of the most important festivals of classical music in Poland and in this part of Europe was born. Today, recreating a concert from half a century ago, we are starting the celebration of Wratislavia's jubilee. A September evening, a church, an oratorio from centuries ago (for example, one of Bach's Passions or Handel's Messiah) – these are typical associations with Wratislavia Cantans. Meanwhile, the initial festivals took place in August, lasted only a few days, and the first concert was organized at the Polish Radio Studio. At the inauguration, there was no great vocal form, but a collection of songs connected by a common denominator of singing. Apart from Zieleński's Magnificat, it was exclusively contemporary, almost "last-minute" music. Today, the audience is often surprised by the presence of new music at the festival, and in the program manifesto, the so-called Inwokacji, the creator of Wratislavia, Andrzej Markowski, wrote: "At this Festival, performers should reach for little-known or hitherto unperformed works by Polish composers."
What did the audience of the 1960s expect from the new festival? How did she perceive Baroque works, rarely performed at that time? How did she react to the avant-garde in music that composers of the time were fascinated by? Did the listeners assume that the contemporary pieces from the program of the first concert would stand the test of time?
After half a century, we still - or perhaps even more willingly than in the 1960s - listen to the excellent Polish Baroque. Hymn Magnificat from the collection Offertoria et communiones totius anniconfirms the class of Mikołaj Zieleński, who modeled his works on the Venetian polychoral style. It was in Venice that the works of the Polish composer were printed. Krzysztof Penderecki's biographical note in the first program book was modest: “Recipient of a number of awards. In addition to composing, he practices pedagogy. His Psalms of David won the second prize in the memorable competition of the Polish Composers' Union in 1959, when Penderecki, an unknown assistant professor, won three top prizes. He combined music with elements of atonality and punctuality with the Psalms translated by Jan Kochanowski. Cinq rechantsOlivier Messiaen is a show of the possibilities of the human voice. We will hear orchestral effects achieved without using a single instrument - only with the voice. Messiaen is also the author of the text of the work, written in processed French and in an invented language – the composer chose the syllables for their sound qualities.
Other songs from the first Wratislavia program did not stand the test of time so well. La espero ( Hope), a composition by Andrzej Koszewski, which was written just three years before the festival, was written to the words of the Esperanto hymn composed by Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of the Esperanto language. "The strongest applause [the audience] awarded Konstanty Regamey's Poèmes de Jean Tardieu, forcing the performers to encore the last part of the work," reads the 1966 review. Artur Malawski's Wierchy ballet, dedicated to the highlanders of Podhale, attracts attention with a very extensive percussion section.
