The rise of historically informed performance practices has allowed small ensembles, like the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra that we welcome every season, to explore a once-forbidden repertoire. Nowadays, nobody is surprised to hear Beethoven’s 'Eroica' Symphony played by around forty musicians, an ensemble size close to that of its original production in Vienna in 1805. With the era of gigantism at an end, the focus is more on the clarity of Beethoven’s delicate textures over its depth. Yo-Yo Ma’s take of Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, with the orchestra reduced to chamber size, is a testament to this shift. Encouraged by Pablo Casals when he was still a precocious child, the great French-born Chinese-American cellist is one of the most well-known and beloved musicians the world over.

L’avènement de la pratique historique a permis aux petites formations, comme l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne que nous recevons chaque saison,  d’envisager un répertoire qui leur était jusque-là interdit. Plus personne ne s’étonne aujourd’hui d’entendre la Symphonie 'Héroïque' de Beethoven jouée par une quarantaine de musiciens, un effectif proche de celui de sa création à Vienne en 1805. L’heure n’est plus au gigantisme et les fines textures de Beethoven gagnent en lisibilité ce qu’elles perdent en épaisseur. La conception très chambriste qu’a Yo-Yo Ma du Concerto pour violoncelle de Robert Schumann prendra aussi toute sa valeur avec un tel effectif. Encouragé par Pablo Casals alors qu’il n’était encore qu’un enfant précoce, le grand violoncelliste sino-franco-américain est un des musiciens les plus connus et les plus aimés de la planète.
