On Fri 7 July La Nuova Musica celebrates Handel’s genius at St Martin-in-the-Fields...

Originally commissioned for the coronation of George II and Queen Caroline, Handel’s Coronation Anthems are supreme examples of grand celebratory music. The first, Zadok the Priest, has been played at every coronation since its premier in 1727, and tells of the anointing of Solomon by Zadok and Nathan, and the people's rejoicing at this event.

As we heard at the coronation of King Charles III, Handel’s Zadok the Priest is one of the most spinetingling moments in all music. His other three coronation anthems are an infectious mix of grandeur, celebratory joy and tenderness. Dixit Dominus is another flamboyant choral classic, written to impress Italian audiences when the young composer was flexing his compositional muscles his in Rome. Experience some of Handel’s greatest music in the superlative hands of La Nuova Musica, directed by the vivacious David Bates, one of the most stylish and engaging baroque ensembles (‘open delight and impassioned beauty’, The Times).
