It was necessary to give this story a context, explains the director Ivo van Hove. An old man gazes helplessly at the great passion of his life; a young lover becomes a stranger in his own country – a situation reminiscent of refugees forced to leave in order to survive. Staging this work seemed very natural to me, as this realistic, almost bastardized language is that of a theater of life. Of course, I started with the score, but I also soaked up the intense correspondence exchanged by Janáček with Kamilia, and I added a contemporary reflection, the music of Annelies Van Parys. It is the combination of these components that makes it possible to give a contemporary resonance to a history marked by the European spirit of the beginning of the last century.

Il fallait donner à cette histoire un contexte, explique le metteur en scène Ivo van Hove. Un vieil homme contemple, impuissant, la grande passion de sa vie ; un jeune amoureux devient étranger en son propre pays – situation qui rappelle celle des réfugiés forcés de partir pour survivre. Mettre en scène cette œuvre m’est apparu très naturel tant cette langue réaliste, presque bâtarde, est celle d’un théâtre de la vie. Je suis bien sûr parti de la partition mais me suis aussi imprégné de l’intense correspondance échangée par Janáček avec Kamilia, et j’ai ajouté un reflet contemporain, la musique d’Annelies Van Parys. C’est l’ensemble de ces composantes qui permet de donner une résonance actuelle à une histoire marquée par l’esprit européen du début du siècle passé.
