French baritone René Massis was born in Lyon. After studying modern literature at the university, he studied singing and acting at the Lyon Conservatory. He then spent seven years in Milan studying the Italian repertoire. In the course of his long career, René Massis performed a vast repertoire, including mainly French operas (Faust, Carmen, Les pêcheurs de perles, L’heure espagnole, Werther) and Italian pieces (Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Pasquale, La favorita, La traviata, Don Carlo, Rigoletto, Falstaff, I vespri siciliani, Ernani, Otello, Un ballo in maschera, Simon Boccanegra, La bohème, Madama Butterfly, André Chénier). He also successfully sang the title role in Wozzeck and Shaklovity in Khovanshchina. He was invited by all the French theatres, including Opera
