The St. Petersburg Opera was founded by director Yuri Alexandrov in 1987, when the society needed new creative ideas. Despite all the difficulties of the perestroika period, the Theatre, conceived as a creative laboratory, immediately took a prominent place in the musical and theatrical Petersburg.

The St. Petersburg Opera possesses a unique repertoire program. It includes wide range of musical works created in different genres.

Over time, the Theatre has grown into a professional state chamber musical theatre "St. Petersburg Opera", well known in Russia and far beyond its borders.

In 1998, the St. Petersburg Opera acquired its own stage, the mansion of Baron von Derviz. Its history is closely connected with the musical and theatrical history of St. Petersburg. Since the day of its foundation, the artistic director of the Theatre is People's Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov.
