The Sultan's Children Fantastic opera in nine scenes by Avner Dorman • Libretto by Ingeborg von Zadow • Commissioned by the Dortmund Opera House • As part of the cooperation between the Young Operas Rhein-Ruhr • In German • From the age of 8 Premiere on March 20, 2022 in the Dortmund Opera House Dates & tickets: www.tdo.li/kinderdessultans The twins Fadeya and Taseh embark on a long journey: They are looking for their father. But he's not just anyone, he's the ruler of Sultania, a far away country in the desert. The way to his palace proves to be dangerous, because the children encounter a hungry giant snake that wants to eat them in their cave for dinner, are almost washed away by a raging river and have to conquer an almost insurmountable wall in the desert. How can they do this? Magical figures and omniscient objects stand by their side and help the resourceful twins to find their way. But the most important companion on this adventure is a very special one: a talking camel! The well-known author for children's and young people's theater Ingeborg von Zadow created a story from a wide variety of motifs from oriental fairy tales that comes from today and yet seems like it came from a far removed time. The color of distant countries is musically captured by Avner Dorman, an Israeli composer who, working in New York, experiences the coexistence of different worlds every day, which is so formative for this opera. The young musician, who has won numerous awards, likes to use exotic instruments and scales in his works, which he mixes with mostly traditional Western styles. In this way he manages to open up imaginative worlds of sound, which he spices up with a good pinch of musical humour.
