The contemporary composer Steve Reich, one of the most important representatives of minimal music, should be known to many Erfurt theatergoers through his video opera Three Tales , which was shown on the studio stage. For his orchestral work Music for Ensemble and Orchestra, written in 2018, the minimal music composer was inspired by the structure of the baroque concerto grosso and lets 20 musicians - each of them a member of the orchestra - emerge as soloists in various combinations.

The final movement of Johannes Brahms' fourth and last symphony is also inspired by Baroque models. Here the great romantic composer quotes a theme from a Bach cantata and develops it into a passacaglia. Brahms spans the 30 variations with a sonata movement from the 19th century and thus combines the musical past with the present and future in an extremely sophisticated way.

In keeping with the motto of the season "Uferlos", Gabriella Smith's Tumblebird Contrails is interspersed with a contemporary orchestral work inspired by the sound world on the shores of the Pacific. The young American composer - a student of John Adams - evokes the screeching of shorebirds, waves and wind noise in the 2014 work.

Der zeitgenössische Komponist Steve Reich, einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Minimal Music, dürfte so manch einem Erfurter Theaterbesucher durch seine Video-Oper Three Tales bekannt sein, die in der Studiobühne gezeigt wurde. Zu seinem 2018 entstandenen Orchesterwerk Music for Ensemble and Orchestra hat sich der Minimal-Music-Komponist von der Struktur des barocken Concerto grosso inspirieren lassen und lässt 20 Musiker:innen – jede:r von ihnen ein Mitglied des Orchesters – in verschiedenen Kombinationen solistisch hervortreten.

Ebenso von barocken Vorbilden inspiriert ist auch der Schlusssatz von Johannes Brahms’ vierter und letzter Sinfonie. Hier zitiert der große romantische Komponist ein Thema aus einer Bach-Kantate und entwickelt es zu einer Passacaglia. Über deren 30 Variationen spannt Brahms einen Sonatensatz des 19. Jahrhunderts und verbindet so auf äußerst ausgefeilte Weise die musikalische Vergangenheit mit Gegenwart und Zukunft.

Passend zum Spielzeitmotto „Uferlos“ erklingt mit Gabriella Smiths Tumblebird Contrails dazwischen ein zeitgenössisches Orchesterwerk, das von der Klangwelt am Ufer des Pazifiks inspiriert wurde. Die junge amerikanische Komponistin – eine Schülerin von John Adams –evoziert in dem 2014 entstandenen Werk das Geschrei von Küstenvögeln, Wellen- und Windgeräusche.
