To ignore the northern lights of music in this season's concert program would be to forget an entire and deeply personal emotional world. It is full of myth and primal secrets in its heavy-blooded melody and dance-joyful gestures: the showpiece is the 2nd symphony by the great Finn Sibelius. Allan Petterson is a true modernist symphonist who, after experimenting with new music, has found a new inwardness that is no longer dictated by form. The symphonic movement is a key to his musical sphere. And Grieg? He brings the incidental music to Ibsen's Peer Gynta Nordic Faust as a life-encompassing figure to sound. Mark Rohde's selection follows the stage music, not just the well-known suites from which individual pieces like pop hits went around the world. These will not be missing, but will be brought back into the context of the powerful drama.
