7. Sinfoniekonzert: War Requiem Britten

Mit einem der beeindruckendsten Oratorienkompositionen wollte das Osnabrücker Symphonieorchester seine Jubiläumsspielzeit 2019 / 20 beenden. Pandemiebedingt konnte das Konzert nicht stattfinden. Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten zum 375. Jubiläum des Westfälischen Friedens passt dieses großartige Werk von Benjamin Britten umso mehr. Britten schrieb sein War Requiem Anfang der 1960er Jahre und verband darin Texte aus der lateinischen Totenmesse mit Antikriegsgedichten des britischen Dichters Wilfred Owen. Dieser verarbeitete in seinem Schaffen seine Erfahrungen aus den Schützengräben des Ersten Weltkriegs. Anlass der Uraufführung des Oratoriums war die Einweihung des Dom-Neubaus in der englischen Stadt Coventry, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg von der Wehrmacht in Schutt und Asche gebombt wurde.

Neben monumentalen Klängen prägen ruhige, melancholische Klänge und stille Trauer das Werk. Die in den Texten zum Ausdruck gebrachte Sinnlosigkeit und Niedertracht des Krieges führt Anklage für die geopferte Jugend und die ungelebten Jahre. Deutlich wird so der warnende Appell Brittens gegen den Krieg und das Votum für Frieden und Versöhnung. Seine Botschaft beeindruckt bis heute und ist – leider – noch immer von bedrückender Aktualität. Entsprechend ist das Konzert Teil der Reihe „musica pro pace“, in der Werke zur Aufführung gebracht werden, die das Verderben des Krieges und die Sehnsucht der Menschen nach Frieden zum Ausdruck bringen.

The Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra wanted to end its anniversary season 2019/20 with one of the most impressive oratorio compositions. Due to the pandemic, the concert could not take place. This great work by Benjamin Britten is all the more appropriate as part of the celebrations for the 375th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia. Britten wrote his War Requiem in the early 1960s, combining texts from the Latin requiem mass with anti-war poems by British poet Wilfred Owen. In his work, he used his experiences from the trenches of the First World War. The reason for the premiere of the oratorio was the inauguration of the new cathedral in the English city of Coventry, which was bombed to rubble by the Wehrmacht during World War II.

In addition to monumental sounds, calm, melancholic sounds and quiet mourning characterize the work. The futility and baseness of the war expressed in the texts leads to accusations for the sacrificed youth and the unlived years. Britten's warning appeal against war and the vote for peace and reconciliation become clear. His message still impresses today and is – unfortunately – still depressingly topical. Accordingly, the concert is part of the "musica pro pace" series , in which works are performed that express the corruption of war and the longing of the people for peace.
