If the circumstances of the death, in 1730, of the famous actress Adrienne Lecouvreur remain mysterious, those of her burial are well known. The parish priest of Saint-Sulpice refused him any ceremony as well as access to the cemetery. She was buried almost clandestinely in quicklime, in a vacant lot on the banks of the Seine, to the great indignation of Voltaire.

Paris, 1730, the famous tragedian Adriana Lecouvreur and the Princess of Bouillon love the same man, Maurice de Saxe, marshal of the French army. After many adventures and crossovers, they discover their rivalry. On her birthday, Adriana dies in the arms of Maurice, who has just reaffirmed his love for her, poisoned by the fatal scent of the bouquet of violets sent by her rival.

Adriana Lecouvreur is the only work by Francesco Cilea, a composer close to verismo, to have remained in the repertoire of the major opera houses. The story of this famous 18th century actresscentury, controversial, tragedian with a sulphurous destiny and admired by Voltaire, is literally part of the history of France. Based on real events, Adrienne's life was fictionalized by Eugène Scribe and brought to the theater in 1849, with the great Sarah Bernhardt in the title role. The subject soon showed his full operatic potential. Arturo Colautti, librettist of Cilea, wanted to bring it to the lyrical stage. The work, centered on amorous rivalry, the spirit of revenge and love, is overwhelming. A sumptuous orchestra, arias of great beauty, virtuosity at the service of emotions, everything contributed to making this score a triumph when it was premiered in Milan in 1902, especially since a certain Enrico Caruso excelled in the very difficult role of Maurice of Saxony (Maurizio). The success since then has never wavered.

Si les circonstances de la mort, en 1730, de la célèbre comédienne Adrienne Lecouvreur restent mystérieuses, celles de son inhumation sont, elles, bien connues. Le curé de Saint-Sulpice lui refusa toute cérémonie ainsi que l’accès au cimetière. Elle fut ensevelie presque clandestinement dans la chaux vive, dans un terrain vague des bords de la Seine, à la grande indignation de Voltaire.

Paris, 1730, la célèbre tragédienne Adriana Lecouvreur et la princesse de Bouillon aiment le même homme, Maurice de Saxe, maréchal de l’armée française. Après maintes péripéties et chassés-croisés, elles découvrent leur rivalité. Le jour de son anniversaire, Adriana meurt dans les bras de Maurice, qui vient de lui réaffirmer son amour, empoisonnée par le parfum fatal du bouquet de violettes envoyé par sa rivale.

Adriana Lecouvreur est le seul ouvrage de Francesco Cilea, compositeur proche du vérisme, à s’être maintenu au répertoire des grandes maisons d’opéra. L’histoire de cette actrice célèbre au XVIIIe siècle, controversée, tragédienne au destin sulfureux et admirée de Voltaire, fait littéralement partie de l’Histoire de France. Au départ de faits réels, la vie d’Adrienne est romancée par Eugène Scribe et portée au théâtre, en 1849, avec dans le rôle-titre la grande Sarah Bernhardt. Le sujet montra vite tout son potentiel opératique. Arturo Colautti, librettiste de Cilea, désira le porter à la scène lyrique. L’œuvre, axée sur la rivalité amoureuse, l’esprit de vengeance et l’amour, est bouleversante. Un orchestre somptueux, des airs de toute beauté, une virtuosité au service des émotions, tout concourait à faire de cette partition un triomphe lors de sa création à Milan en 1902, d’autant qu’un certain Enrico Caruso excellait dans le rôle très difficile de Maurice de Saxe (Maurizio). Le succès, depuis, ne s’est jamais démenti.
