Opera in concert version - Marin Marais' first “solo” musical tragedy.
Known as a performer and author of pieces for the viola da gamba, Marin Marais was also an opera musician and even conductor of the orchestra for several years. He composed four lyrical tragedies, one of which, Ariadne and Bacchus, has yet to be rediscovered. Libretto rich in contrasting characters and situations, dense and dramatic score, colorful orchestration: it is unquestionably one of the centerpieces of the second half of the reign of Louis XIV, whose revival is due to the Center de Musique Baroque de Versailles.

Libretto by Saint-Jean, inspired by the tragedy "Ariane" by Thomas Corneille and the heroic comedy by Jean Donneau de Visé "Les Amours" or "Le Mariage de Bacchus et d'Ariane".

Connu comme interprète et auteur de pièces pour la viole de gambe, Marin Marais était aussi musicien d’opéra et même chef de l’orchestre durant plusieurs années. Il composa quatre tragédies lyriques dont l’une, Ariane et Bacchus, reste encore à redécouvrir. Livret riche en personnages et en situations contrastés, partition dense et dramatique, orchestration colorée : c’est incontestablement l’une des pièces maîtresses de la seconde moitié du règne de Louis XIV dont on doit la renaissance au Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.
