A Ring at Versailles, Ludwig II of Bavaria's dream
For any opera house, Richard Wagner's Ring - the Ring of the Nibelung - is one of the peaks of lyrical art. Composed between 1853 and 1874, this cycle is totally mythical, built as a "stage festival" in a Prologue: The Rhinegold , and three days: The Valkyrie, Siegfried, The Twilight of the Gods . This famous Tetralogy was created as a whole for the inauguration of the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth in 1876.
The absolute passion that animated King Ludwig II of Bavaria for Versailles and for Wagner makes a singular link between this Ring and the most beautiful Palace in the World...
To celebrate its two hundred and fifty years, and the upcoming anniversary of the one hundred and fifty years of the Ring , the Opéra Royal de Versailles has asked the Théâtre National de la Sarre in Saarbrücken, who will stage each of the four Ring operas in the four years coming, to come and present them at Versailles in a concert version: the singers will perform their role without score, the orchestra and the choir also being on the stage.
Since its establishment in 1786, the Saarland National Theater has become one of Germany's most renowned theatre, ballet and opera houses, putting on seven hundred performances and 200,000 spectators each season. Its National Orchestra created in 1912 has been conducted by great permanent conductors, especially in recent decades, such as Jiří Kout, Christof Perick and Jun Märkl, and the Frenchman Sébastien Rouland has been the holder since 2018. He will be the conductor of the whole Tetralogy.
It is a tradition for every German opera to regularly stage a production of the Ring Cycle. The singers of the permanent troupe, of which this is a base of the repertoire, are supplemented by guest soloists who perform the major roles in all of the German-speaking operas. It is therefore a project rooted in one hundred and fifty years of practice that the Saarbrücken Opera will present at Versailles for four years.
