"Free the land, bind the bond! A daring game got us there; the power of love has made our ruse a success.”

Oh, he only kissed her on the shoulder – but that leads to all sorts of complications in Poland occupied by Saxony. In order to thwart a proud Polish countess, a pompous Saxon colonel tricks her daughter into a stray student as a noble bridegroom. But the intrigue doesn't work out - in the end not only does the Poles revolt against the occupiers, but the "beggar student" is also raised to the nobility as thanks for his help.
Even if the story isn't quite so precise with the historical truth, the inspiration from the baroque period guarantees an opulent interior. And with a wink typical of operettas and Carl Millöcker's musical catchy tunes, luck and money, love and national liberation come together.
