The Gypsy Baron is one of the most famous operettas and, at the same time, the greatest success of its composer. During the premiere, the audience's enthusiasm was so great that almost the entire performance was played as an encore. Strauss composed music full of lightness and grace. Driven by the desire to write a true opera, he relied on elaborate vocal parts. The action was placed in spectacular scenery, in which the exoticism of Gypsy folklore is intertwined with the splendor of Viennese salons. Director Tomasz Konina, meeting Strauss's ambitions, realized the spectacle with great panache. He interpreted the libretto in such an original way that the trials and tribulations of the characters - apart from excellent entertainment - provide the viewers with many reasons for reflection. The plot was moved from the 18th century to the interwar period, and next to the Gypsy caravan and a chest full of treasures, there was a provincial circus and cabaret like from a Bob Fosse movie. “In the dancing, crazy spectacle,” the director wrote, “you can feel the atmosphere of danger and the approaching World War II, where each of the characters will have to find their place and define their place.”

BARON CYGAŃSKI to jedna z najsłynniejszych operetek i zarazem największy sukces jej kompozytora. Podczas prawykonania entuzjazm publiczności był tak ogromny, że spektakl niemal w całości został zagrany na bis. Strauss skomponował muzykę pełną lekkości i wdzięku. Powodowany pragnieniem napisania prawdziwej opery, bazował na rozbudowanych partiach wokalnych. Akcja umieszczona została w efektownych sceneriach, w których egzotyka cygańskiego folkloru przeplata się z przepychem wiedeńskich salonów. Reżyser Tomasz Konina, wychodząc naprzeciw ambicjom Straussa, zrealizował spektakl z ogromnym rozmachem. Libretto zinterpretował przy tym w sposób tak niebanalny, że perypetie bohaterów – obok wyśmienitej rozrywki – dostarczają widzom wielu powodów do refleksji. Fabułę przeniesiono z wieku XVIII w dwudziestolecie międzywojenne, a obok cygańskiego taboru i skrzyni pełnej skarbów, pojawił się prowincjonalny cyrk i kabaret niczym z filmu Boba Fosse'a. „W roztańczonym, szalonym spektaklu” – napisał reżyser – „czuć atmosferę zagrożenia i zbliżającej się II wojny światowej, gdzie każdy z bohaterów będzie musiał się odnaleźć i określić swoje miejsce”.
