The execution is canceled: a magpie was to blame for everything. In 1815, two Parisian tabloid authors, d'Aubigny and Caigniez, turned the true story of a maid who was innocently sentenced to death into a melodrama. When Rossini was looking for suitable opera material two years later, he decided to work on Diebischen Elster- but with a happy ending. His heroine and justice victim is called Ninetta. A rejected suitor accuses her of stealing silver cutlery to help her deserted father. The real thief, a magpie, is only discovered at the last minute. The plot revolves around this coincidence and causes fatal entanglements in the peasant milieu. Rossini's music balances between pathos and a firework of coloratura. In the first scenes he retains the gloomy mood of the original, without giving up the comic scenes and a happy ending. The score of the 25-year-old composer also points far beyond the time of its creation in the art of musical characterization. His music lets the characters in the bizarre plot alternate between tragedy and comedy. Only the bird remains silent
