Uve Eriks Laufenbergs for the operetta "The Merry Widow"

"With this wonderful music, it's a beautifully told relationship story," says director Uwe Erik Laufenberg, who staged Franz Lehár's immortal operetta THE MERRY WIDOW. On September 22, 2022, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet invites you to the premiere of Franz Lehar's operetta "The Merry Widow". The new production is created by an international team led by musical director Tomas Rösner and director Uve Erik Laufenberg. Conductor Kaspars Ādamsons, scenographer Julius Teodors Zemmelmans, costume designer Jesika Karge, choreographer Mirjama Lifka and lighting designer Andreas Franks also work in the creative team. The Merry Widow is one of the most popular operettas of all time. It had its world premiere in Vienna in 1905, but it was staged for the first and only time in 1933 at the Latvian National Opera.

Hanna’s inheritance of 200 million after the death of her husband, a Pontevedrian banker, makes her a desirable catch among the cavaliers in Paris. If only the Pontevedro ambassador, Baron Zeta, could find a wealthy, compatriot groom for the rich woman (and keep Hanna's wealth in the country), he could save the country from insolvency. The hopes are pinned on the charming heartbreaker Count Danilo. Although he and Hanna share a romantic past, the Count is afraid of being seen as a bounty hunter and is not ready to confess his feelings. Franz Lehár’s glorious melodies whirl with intrigue and passion, but after a series of comic misunderstandings, the ending is happy.

One of the world’s most popular operettas Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) had its world premiere in Vienna in 1905. It premiered at the Latvian National Opera in 1933. The new production of the operetta is staged in our opera house under the direction of the musical director and conductor Thomas Rösner and the stage director Uwe Eric Laufenberg.

The operetta is sung in German but spoken in several languages. Surtitles are provided in Latvian and English.

Divsimt miljonu vērtais mantojums, ko Hanna saņēmusi pēc vīra – pontevedriešu baņķiera nāves, padara viņu par iekārojamu līgavu franču kavalieru aprindās Parīzē. Ja vien Pontevedro vēstniekam, baronam Zetam izdotos bagātniecei atrast līgavaini no tautiešu vidus (un paturēt Hannas bagātības valstī), viņš glābtu valsti no maksātnespējas. Cerības tiek liktas uz šarmanto siržgrauzi grāfu Danilo. Lai arī viņu un Hannu saista kopīga romantiskā pagātne, grāfs baidās iegūt miljonu mednieka slavu, tāpēc nav gatavs atzīties savās jūtās. Franca Lehāra krāšņo melodiju virpulī uzjundī intrigas, dzirkstī kaislības, bet komisku pārpratumu jūklī beigas tomēr ir laimīgas.

Viena no populārākajām operetēm pasaulē pasaules pirmizrādi piedzīvoja Vīnē 1905. gadā. Latvijas Nacionālajā operā tā pirmuzvesta 1933. gadā. Operetes jauniestudējums mūsu opernamā tapis muzikālā vadītāja un diriģenta Tomasa Rēznera (Thomas Rösner) un režisora Ūves Ērika Laufenberga (Uwe Eric Laufenberg) vadībā.

Operetes jauniestudējumā tiek dziedāts vāciski, bet runātie dialogi ir dažādās valodās. Pieejami titri latviešu un angļu valodā.
