Mozart wrote the opera Don Giovanni based on Tirso de Molina's 1630 play "The Mocker of Seville and the Stone Guest" and its protagonist Don Juan. When premiered in 1787 at the National Theater in Prague, the opera was received with open arms, but the work remained a bit of a mystery to 18th-century Viennese audiences. However, a few decades later, the work carried the title of the greatest opera in history.

The lecherous womanizer Don Giovanni and his faithful servant Leporello have traveled the world alone, leaving behind thousands of broken hearts. However, not all women accept this and so Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Zerlina decide to reveal the man's true nature. Don Giovanni enjoys his adventures, but in the end, the mocker must bear his own cross.

This centuries-old story trades a sword for a phone to bring the age-old anti-hero back to the stage to take responsibility for his actions.

"Don Giovanni" has only been staged at the Vanemuise Theater once before, in 1990. This time, drama director Elmo Nüganen will stage the version, for whom this is his first encounter with Vanemuise, but not with Mozart: in 1994, he staged "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Pärnu Opera

Tirso de Molina 1630. aastal avaldatud näidendi „Sevilla pilkaja ja kivist külaline“ ning selle peategelase Don Juani alusel kirjutas Mozart ooperi „Don Giovanni“. Esietendudes 1787 Praha Rahvusteatris, võeti ooper avasüli vastu, kuid 18. sajandi Viini publiku jaoks jäi teos pisut mõistatuseks. Ent juba mõned aastakümned hiljem kandis teos ajaloo suurima ooperi tiitlit.

Liiderlik naistemees Don Giovanni ja tema ustav teener Leporello on kahekesi seigelnud üle maailma, jättes endast maha tuhandeid murtud südameid. Kõik naised aga sellega ei lepi ja nii otsustavad Donna Anna, Donna Elvira ja Zerlina mehe tõelise olemuse paljastada. Don Giovanni küll naudib oma avantüüre, ent oma risti peab pilkaja lõpuks ikka ise kandma.

„Don Giovannit“ on Vanemuise teatris varem lavastatud vaid korra, aastal 1990. Seekordse versiooni toob lavale draamalavastaja Elmo Nüganen, kellele on see esimene kokkupuude Vanemuisega, kuid mitte Mozartiga: 1994. aastal tõi ta Pärnu Ooperis välja „Figaro pulma“.
