In 1893 at the age of seventy, Verdi composed Falstaff his last opera. He was then internationally recognized and called the king of Italian opera, with 27 operas to his credit. The work was largely a labor of love with the depiction of one of his favorite Shakespearean characters, Sir John Falstaff. Verdi collaborated with Arrigo Boito, the librettist with whom he had just achieved a Shakespearean triumph thanks to Otello . Boito's libretto is a distillation of The Merry Wives of Windsor , enriched with elements drawn from Parts I and II of Henry IV . It recounts the attempts of the ridiculous and fat knight to seize the money of two men by seducing their wives, Alice and Meg. However, these women deceive and humiliate Falstaff with the help of Mistress Sprightly and Nanetta, Alice's daughter. Nanetta also thwarts her father's plans to marry her to the wealthy Doctor Caius, and instead marries her young and attractive lover, Fenton. Verdi's score, although composed at an advanced age, seems more like the work of a young man. Boito's fast-paced action is painted with elegantly lively, changing and jumping melodies, supported by musical cohesion ensured by short repeated motifs. Longer pieces are avoided until the finale, where one can appreciate Nanetta's exquisite fairy queen aria, "On the breath of a light breeze, fly, light spirits", and the brilliant fugal chorus finale, “The whole world is a joke.” Meanwhile, Verdi's colorful composition includes details such as cellos and a piccolo playing four octaves apart when Falstaff complains that he won't be loved if he becomes skinny. In the third act, a high piccolo against four horns creates eerie tension as Mistress Quickly and Alice tell the ghostly tale of Herne's Oak.

L’œuvre était en grande partie un travail d’amour avec la représentation de l’un de ses personnages shakespeariens préférés, Sir John Falstaff. Verdi collabora avec Arrigo Boito, le librettiste avec qui il venait de remporter un triomphe Shakespearien grâce à Otello. Le livret de Boito est une distillation des Joyeuses Commères de Windsor, enrichie d’éléments tirés des parties I et II d’Henri IV. Il raconte les tentatives du ridicule et gros chevalier pour s’emparer de l’argent de deux hommes en séduisant leurs épouses, Alice et Meg. Cependant, ces femmes trompent et humilient Falstaff avec l’aide de Mistress Sprightly et de Nanetta, la fille d’Alice. Nanetta déjoue également les plans de son père qui souhaite la marier au riche Docteur Caius, et elle s’unie plutôt à son jeune et séduisant amant, Fenton. La partition de Verdi, bien que composée à un âge avancé, ressemble davantage à l’œuvre d’un jeune homme. L’action rapide de Boito est peinte à l’aide de mélodies élégamment vives, changeantes et sautillantes, soutenues par une cohésion musicale assurée par de courts motifs répétés. Les morceaux plus longs sont évités jusqu’au finale, où l’on peut apprécier l’exquise aria de la reine des fées de Nanetta, « Sur le souffle d’une brise légère, volez, esprits légers », et le brillant chœur fugué final, « Le monde entier est une plaisanterie ». Entre-temps, la composition colorée de Verdi comprend des détails tels que des violoncelles et un piccolo jouant à quatre octaves d’intervalle lorsque Falstaff se plaint de ne pas être aimé s’il devient maigre. Au troisième acte, un piccolo aigu contre quatre cors crée une tension sinistre lorsque Mistress Quickly et Alice racontent l’histoire fantomatique de Herne’s Oak.
