“Operetta is, in fact, the most serious stage genre, the most beautiful and free with which we can strike kings without danger, and which, born of meaningful, imaginative, innovative souls, can destroy more of this rotten world and make the future better — parliamentary obstruction ... ”(Ady Endre)

A young man introducing himself under the name of Béla Török takes on the job of a landlord on the Decsényi estate. The man lived his life as Count Tasziló Endrődy-Wittenberg until he became impoverished. Unaware of all this, the mistress of the estate arrives home from Vienna, excited by a love disappointment. Marica sees a dowry hunter in every of her suitors, so she finds herself an imaginary fiancé: Baron Kálmán Zsupán. Marica and Taszilo, of course, fall in love. The non-existent Zupan pops up unexpectedly, and friends and relatives who want to help confuse events, but in the end, love wins.

A contemporary critique writes of the Vienna premiere: "Kálmán has no more purposeful and confident master of operetta in the alternation of cheerful and serious moods, in the arrangement of voices for non-exhaustive inventions, in the proportion of singing and dancing numbers, and in the intensification of finals."
