It is the Swiss myth par excellence: Wilhelm Tell's fight for freedom, which together with the original cantons succeeds in shaking off the Habsburg dictatorship. The fascination and radiance of this character was and is enormous and has left its mark on the cultural history of many countries. In this sense, it is significant that the most famous operatic version of the material was written by the Italian Gioachino Rossini and premiered in Paris. The question of the conditions of freedom knows no borders, and every generation is always faced with the question of which means are justified and right in which situation to guarantee the freedom of the individual and the community or to regain it if it is lost be. In any case, Rossini gives hope above all to those who believe in love, which can lead to peace between hostile parties. The director Amélie Niermeyer and her stage designer Christian Schmidt do not embark on a historical search for traces in Switzerland, but see the great longing for freedom and its promise in many European countries more urgently than ever.

Es ist der Schweizer Mythos schlechthin: der Freiheitskampf Wilhelm Tells, dem es gelingt, gemeinsam mit den
Urkantonen die Habsburger Gewaltherrschaft abzuschütteln. Die Faszination und Strahlkraft dieser Figur war
und ist enorm und hat ihre Spuren in der Kulturgeschichte vieler Länder hinterlassen. Dass die berühmteste Opernversion des Stoffes ausgerechnet vom
Italiener Gioachino Rossini stammt und in Paris uraufgeführt wurde, ist in diesem Sinne bezeichnend. Die Frage
nach den Bedingungen von Freiheit kennt eben keine
Grenzen, und jede Generation steht immer wieder vor der
Frage, welche Mittel in welcher Situation gerechtfertigt
und richtig sind, um die Freiheit des Einzelnen wie der
Gemeinschaft zu garantieren oder erneut zu erlangen,
sollte sie verloren sein. Rossini jedenfalls lässt vor allem
diejenigen hoffen, die an die Liebe glauben, die zwischen
verfeindeten Parteien zu Frieden führen kann.
Die Regisseurin Amélie Niermeyer und ihr Bühnenbildner Christian Schmidt begeben sich nicht auf eine
historisierende Spurensuche in der Schweiz, sondern
sehen in vielen Ländern Europas drängender denn je die
grosse Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und ihr Versprechen
