In Johann Sebastian Bachs Schaffen gehört die h-Moll-Messe BWV 232 zu den großen Mysterien, über das sich viele Bachforscher noch heute den Kopf zerbrechen. Wieso komponierte der lutherische Bach eine vollständige katholische Messe auf Latein? Was war der Anlass? Wann erfolgte die Uraufführung? All dies sind Fragen, auf die es bis heute keine endgültige Antwort gibt. Über mehrere Jahrzehnte erstreckte sich die Vervollständigung der Messe: 1733 verfasste Bach das Kyrie und das Gloria, 1748/49 folgten die übrigen Teile, wobei Bach auf frühere Kompositionen zurückgriff. Seit dem Jahr 2015 gehört das Manuskript der letzten Fassung zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe – eine Auszeichnung, die den epochalen Wert der Messe würdigt.

In Johann Sebastian Bach's work, the B minor Mass BWV 232 is one of the great mysteries that many Bach researchers are still racking their brains about today. Why did the Lutheran Bach compose a complete Catholic mass in Latin? What was the occasion? When did the premiere take place? All of these are questions to which there is still no definitive answer. The completion of the mass took several decades: Bach wrote the Kyrie and the Gloria in 1733, followed by the remaining parts in 1748/49, with Bach drawing on earlier compositions. The manuscript of the final version has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 - an award that recognizes the epochal value of the fair.

After Telemann's “Thunder Ode” and Bach's Missa brevis in F major BWV 233 in the last concert season, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra is now devoting itself to Bach's Monumental Mass, together with the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, which is not only known for its outstanding interpretations of Bach's works , but we have had a close musical friendship for seven years now, which the press even called a “happy relationship” – according to the Berliner Tagesspiegel. In fact, both ensembles complement each other not only musically, but also on a personal level, so that making music together becomes an exhilarating experience for the audience.
