Crucial moment of maternal love, even more perhaps than the Nativity, it is the Passion and the pain of the Virgin Mary in the face of the death of Jesus which will retain the inspiration of the composers of the Baroque in their homages to the Madonna. . The Stabat Mater , a long medieval poem describing the sufferings of Mary at the foot of the cross where her tortured son is dying, has been set to music in various versions, both intimate and amply elaborate, but always with the same depth of feeling.

Moment crucial de l’amour maternel, plus encore peut-être que la Nativité, c’est la Passion et la douleur de la Vierge Marie face à la mort de Jésus qui retiendront l’inspiration des compositeurs du Baroque dans leurs hommages à la Madone. Le Stabat Mater, long poème médiéval décrivant les souffrances de Marie au pied de la croix où son fils, supplicié, se meurt, a été mis en musique en diverses versions tant intimistes qu’amplement élaborées, mais toujours avec la même profondeur de sentiment.
