Gluck forever changed the history of opera, bringing it from the baroque era to the classical age. Arriving in Paris in the fall of 1773 with the support of Marie-Antoinette, who had been his pupil in Vienna and encouraged by Antoine Dauvergne, then one of the directors of the Royal Academy of Music, Gluck came to France with the intention of renew the French lyrical genre. His project is then based on the tragedy of Racine inspired by that of Euripides. He found there the material necessary for the elaboration of a work of character with multiple stakes and conflicts of interest. If the work is indeed imbued with grandeur and gravity specific to French opera, it offers real novelties, particularly in musical writing, where the orchestra takes on an important brand new story by preparing and commenting on the action as the choirs could do in Greek tragedy. Julien Chauvin has surrounded himself with a magnificent team of singers to serve thisIphigénie , which will be fascinating to compare with the works of her predecessors Lully, Charpentier and Rameau presented this season, thus offering a unique panorama of the Grand Siècle of French opera.

Gluck changea à tout jamais l’histoire de l’opéra, le faisant passer de l’ère baroque à l’âge classique. Arrivé à Paris à l’automne 1773 avec le soutien de Marie-Antoinette qui avait été son élève à Vienne et encouragé par Antoine Dauvergne, alors l’un des directeurs de l’Académie Royale de Musique, Gluck vient en France avec le dessein de renouveler le genre lyrique français. Son projet s’appuie alors sur la tragédie de Racine inspirée de celle d’Euripide. Il y trouve le matériau nécessaire à l’élaboration d’un ouvrage de caractère aux multiples enjeux et conflits d’intérêt. Si l’ouvrage est bien empreint de grandeur et de gravité propres à l’opéra français, elle en offre de véritables nouveautés en particulier dans l’écriture musicale, où l’orchestre prend une importante toute nouvelle en préparant et commentant l’action comme les chœurs pouvaient le faire dans la tragédie grecque. Julien Chauvin s’est entouré d’une magnifique équipe de chanteurs pour servir cette Iphigénie qu’il sera passionnant de mettre en regard des ouvrages de ses prédécesseurs Lully, Charpentier et Rameau présentés cette saison offrant ainsi un panorama unique du Grand siècle de l’opéra français.
