When the composer Max meets the opera singer Anita in the middle of the mountain solitude, it is love at first sight. But while Anita is looking forward to a successful career, Max remains frozen over his compositions. Everything changes with Jonny's appearance: now jazz comes into opera and movement into history. Violins change owners, couples their partners and people their views. The future has begun.  

Ernst Křenek's opera was celebrated as a successful period piece in 1927, only to disappear from the repertoire a short time later as "degenerate art". Today, "Jonny plays" is more relevant than ever.
