the story
In Lima, la Périchole and Piquillo, a couple of street singers, fail to earn enough to get married. Released incognito from the palace, the viceroy of Peru, Don Andrés de Ribeira, wants to slum with the people. He fell in love with La Périchole and took her to Court to make her his favorite. Distraught, Piquillo accepts the proposal of the First Gentleman of the Court, who offers to marry this future favorite without revealing who it is. It is only the day after the wedding that Piquillo, sobered up, realizes that the woman he has just married is none other than his Périchole. Enraged, Piquillo insults the monarch, who puts him in jail. La Périchole tries to get him to escape. The Viceroy surprises them and has them both locked up. They escape and resume their life as street walkers. Don Andrés finds them but, touched by their singing, lets them get married...

What they say
Opera on servility, opera on power, opera that speaks of freedom... It is in this sense that I asked the scenographer and the costume designer to work: confrontation of contemporary worlds that do not understand each other, insolence of powers who lose touch with reality and live to the rhythm of continuous news and celebrity magazines...! The first chorus of La Périchole says: "Let's have fun, we were paid for that!" This is, in short, the fate of artists, to amuse... to make fun of! Let's have fun, let's laugh, it's not yet the revolution in a South America of operetta, Piquillo is not Che Guevara... Périchole is not Eva Perón... The Viceroy doesn't exist... Surely not! Have ?
