The bourgeois daughter Luisa Miller falls in love with the supposed boy Carlo, who soon reveals himself to be the Count's son Rodolfo. Both fathers are - for different reasons - against the inappropriate marriage, and at the instigation of the
intriguer Wurm, with the help of the Duchess Federica, a cabal is spun, in which the two lovers perish.

 

Schiller, along with Shakespeare, is Verdi's greatest source of inspiration throughout his life. ›Luisa Miller‹ is the third opera he is writing based on material by the great Weimar playwright. Although the Neapolitan censorship required considerable changes to
the literary original, the great music psychologist Verdi managed to create a real bourgeois tragedy that introduced his middle creative phase and as a direct anticipation of the operas Rigoletto, The Troubadour and La Traviata, known as the popular trilogy ‹ can be seen.

Die drei Akte sind jeweils mit ›Liebe‹, ›Intrige‹ und ›Gift‹ übertitelt. Schiller auf Italienisch also.

 

Die Bürgerstochter Luisa Miller verliebt sich in den vermeintlichen Burschen Carlo, der sich bald als der Grafensohn Rodolfo zu erkennen gibt. Beide Väter sind - aus verschiedenen Beweggründen - gegen die unstandesgemäße Verbindung, und auf Betreiben des
Intriganten Wurm wird unter Zuhilfenahme der Herzogin Federica eine Kabale gesponnen, an der die beiden Liebenden zugrunde gehen.

 

Schiller ist zusammen mit Shakespeare zeitlebens Verdis größte Quelle der Inspiration. ›Luisa Miller‹ ist die dritte Oper, die er nach einem Stoff des großen Weimarer Dramatikers schreibt. Die neapolitanische Zensur verlangt zwar erhebliche Veränderungen an
der literarischen Vorlage, dennoch gelingt dem großen Musikpsychologen Verdi ein echtes bürgerliches Trauerspiel, das seine mittlere Schaffensphase einleitet und als eine direkte Vorwegnahme der als Volkstrilogie bekannten Opern ›Rigoletto‹, ›Der Troubadour‹ und ›La Traviata‹ gesehen werden kann.

Inszeniert wird ›Luisa Miller‹ von Barbora Horáková Joly, die bei den International Opera Awards 2018 den Preis der Kategorie »Newcomer« gewonnen hat.
