Coming from a long line of Church composers and destined by family tradition to be organist and choirmaster, Puccini was ultimately more successful in the field of opera than in that of sacred music. A youthful work, his Messa di Gloria would never be published during his lifetime. The score, whose themes will be reused by the musician in Edgar and Manon Lescaut, foreshadows the style of his great operas which he will undertake the composition later. And yet… Designed for a large audience, this Mass proves to be an interesting success where we see the musician experimenting with perspectives as original as they are modern, including in particular a surprisingly luxuriant orchestration. Associated withCappricio Sinfonico, one of the rare symphonic pages of the composer, this concert makes us "penetrate" the most intimate and spiritual side of Puccini

Issu d’une longue lignée de compositeurs d’Eglise et destiné par la tradition familiale à être organiste et maître de chapelle, Puccini s’illustrera finalement davantage dans le domaine de l’opéra que dans celui de la musique sacrée. Œuvre de jeunesse, sa Messa di Gloria ne sera jamais publiée de son vivant. La partition, dont des thèmes seront réutilisés par le musicien dans Edgar et Manon Lescaut, préfigurent le style de ses grands opéras dont il entreprendra la composition par la suite. Et pourtant… Conçue pour un vaste effectif, cette Messe se révèle une intéressante réussite où l’on voit le musicien y expérimenter des perspectives aussi originales que modernes dont notamment une orchestration étonnamment luxuriante. Associée au Cappricio Sinfonico, l’une des rares pages symphoniques du compositeur, ce concert nous fait  « pénétrer » la face la plus intime et spirituelle de Puccini
