After a war injury thwarted the German-Jewish musician's career as a pianist, he decided to pursue a career as a composer. As a private student of Franz Schreker, Hans Heller made rapid progress, as his piano sonata shows. He wrote it in 1926 for the pianist Inge Eichwede, who later became his wife. The small family fled to Paris to escape the Nazi regime. Despite difficult living conditions, Heller created larger works here, such as a piano concerto and two symphonies. Under the German occupation of France, he was interned and forced to do forced labor. He only escaped deportation to an extermination camp at the last moment. Jascha Nemtsov, piano, and Tehila Nini Goldstein, soprano, perform compositions written in Berlin, Paris and New York. Albrecht Dümling talks to Wolfgang Eichwede, the composer's nephew, about the life and work of Hans Heller.
