The great divas of the Roaring Twenties
Robert Stolz' film operetta »Das Frauenparadies« inspired the title of this programme. Filmed in Vienna in 1936, this modern-day operetta takes you into the world of Viennese fashion. One of the most beautiful songs - »Sag, was Du traumst« - also enchants the audience of our program.
With his orchestra Divertimento Viennese, Vinzenz Praxmarer revives the sound of popular music from the 1920s and 1930s. Original arrangements from the time of its creation bring the atmosphere of the entertainment theaters between Vienna and Berlin in the tried and tested tradition of the salon orchestra.
These were shaped by mostly Jewish divas: adored, revered, admired, they created small, fine chansons, big, pompous leading roles, funny hits and frivolous petits d'oeuvres. They sang, played and danced from waltz to shimmy in operettas, on cabaret stages and in young talkies.
Today their names are forgotten - our program wants to rescue them from oblivion and breathe new life into them. Rita Georg and Betty Fischer, Rosy Barsony and Gitta Alpar, Martha Eggerth and Zarah Leander: They all entertained their audience and shaped the entertainment of their time. Ethel Merhaut slips into the role of the divas: her diverse talent ranges from romantic arias to swinging dances to frivolous hits.
Stefano Bernardin leads through the evening as an impresario who is closely connected to the great, competing, eccentric divas and gives an insight into their professional and private lives.
The program includes well-known and unknown works by Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Fritz Kreisler, Paul Abraham, Kurt Weill, Robert Stolz, Werner Richard Heymann, Abraham Ellstein etc. The texts come from the greats of their guild: Fritz Löhner-Beda, Ernst Marischka, Julius Brammer, Alfred Grünwald, Robert Gilbert, Bruno Balz, etc.
Original sound of a different kind entertains at a high level and immerses oneself in a diverse musical world.

Die großen Diven der Roaring Twenties
Robert Stolz' Filmoperette »Das Frauenparadies« inspirierte den Titel dieses Programmes. 1936 in Wien gedreht, entführt diese der modernen Zeit angepasste Operette in die Welt der Wiener Mode. Eines der schönsten Lieder – »Sag, was Du träumst« – verzaubert auch das Publikum unseres Programmes.
Vinzenz Praxmarer lässt mit seinem Orchester Divertimento Viennese den Klang der Unterhaltungsmusik der 1920er und 1930er Jahre wiederauferstehen. Originalarrangements aus der Entstehungszeit versetzen in bewährter Salonorchester-Tradition in die Atmosphäre der Unterhaltungstheater zwischen Wien und Berlin.
Diese waren geprägt von zumeist jüdischen Diven: Angebetet, verehrt, bewundert kreierten sie kleine, feine Chansons, große, pompöse Hauptrollen, witzige Schlager und frivole Petitessen. Sie sangen, spielten und tanzten von Walzer bis Shimmy in Operetten, auf Kabarettbühnen und im jungen Tonfilm.
Heute sind ihre Namen vergessen – unser Programm will sie der Vergessenheit entreißen und ihnen neues Leben einhauchen. Rita Georg und Betty Fischer, Rosy Barsony und Gitta Alpar, Martha Eggerth und Zarah Leander: Sie alle unterhielten ihr Publikum und prägten das Entertainment ihrer Zeit. Ethel Merhaut schlüpft in die Rolle der Diven: Von romantischen Arien über swingende Tänze bis zu frivolen Schlagern reicht ihr vielfältiges Talent.
Durch den Abend führt Stefano Bernardin als Impresario, der den großen, konkurrierenden, exzentrischen Diven eng verbunden ist und Einblick in ihr berufliches wie privates Leben gibt.
