Essential at the time of the birth of opera, the myth of Orpheus also accompanied some of its greatest reforms. Mirroring Monteverdi's Orfeo , Raphaël Pichon and the Pygmalion Ensemble present a concert version of his other most famous lyrical avatar: Orpheusby Gluck, quintessence of the sublime classic, boasting a century and a half later of an ideal of simple and touching beauty. Framed by furious or elegiac dances, the prayer of Orpheus trying to bend the infernal chorus by the sheer force of his song and his lyre is one of the most poignant pages in the entire history of opera. We hear here essentially the work in the adaptation made by Berlioz in 1859 for the great Pauline Viardot. Emily D'Angelo, a mezzo-soprano with an imperial technique and a fiery temperament, made both a role and her debut at the Festival d'Aix; Sabine Devieilhe's ardent Eurydice and Lea Desandre's Mischievous Love accompany her in her initiatory quest.
