With Ruggero Leoncavallo's popular Italian opera classic »Pagliacci«, director Andrea Schwalbach creates a great opera in a compact format. The drama of the protagonist: inside, whose emotional world is upside down, condenses in a chamber play, which focuses on the big topics such as longing, jealousy, love and the associated and inseparable suffering.
Bajazzo Canio travels with his hiking group under the Italian sun from village to village and gives the laughing clown every evening. How the artist goes under the guise of masquerade remains invisible to the public. Canio's wife Nedda longs for a steady life away from the traveling circus and falls in love with the farmer Silvio, who offers the young woman a perspective. During a performance, Canio becomes a victim of his own jealousy. A cheerful game suddenly turns into deadly seriousness.
The composers of Italian verismo (derived from the adjective “vero”, in English: true / genuine) anticipated a Hollywood avant la lettre, in which stories “like from life” should inspire the audience and pull them into the emotional vortex of events. Ruggero Leoncavallo succeeded in creating an ambivalent, gripping crime opera that is bursting with tension and moves to tears.
