A ring, a deep well, the rushing sea in the distance and the fear of free fall: in a world full of symbols, the tender, almost childlike love develops between Mélisande and Pelléas, the brother of her husband Golaud. Incapable of fathoming and naming their feelings, the three are headed straight for catastrophe... Debussy set the symbolic main work of the playwright Maurice Maeterlinck to music in a tonal language that was as gloomy as it was sensitive and precise, and created one of the most influential French operas of the early 20th century. With Elmar Goerden, a director looks into the abysses of the souls of these characters, who has shown his intuition for the multi-layered hidden longings of people in the last seasons at the Berne Theater across all genres.
