In the small coastal town of Borough, people wrestle with nature to survive in daily struggles. The fisherman Peter Grimes has a particularly difficult time: his last helper was killed during the hard work and although his death is considered an accident, the community turns against him. Their hostility escalates when Peter gets a new assistant from the orphanage. Because of Peter's rough behavior, even his advocate, Ellen Orford, distances herself from him. Threatened by the angry crowd, Peter and his apprentice flee over the cliffs: The boy dies, Peter sinks himself into the sea with his fishing boat.
Benjamin Britten made his homeland, the rough east coast of England, the setting for his first opera. From the inhospitable coast and rough seas he created a harsh and gloomy atmosphere in which people fight against the elements of nature and in which the outsider Peter Grimes goes down. In addition to the rising music, the quality of the opera is due to its shifting between the social tableau and the debate about collective and individual guilt.
