In France, Opera has always been about Power. Its brilliance reflects royal power, and it is no coincidence that the “French-style” Lyrical Tragedy was born during the time of Louis XIV. But someone overshadowed the Sun King: Superintendent Fouquet. He offered the king a sumptuous feast in his castle of Vaux. His meteoric rise made the king jealous, who imprisoned the financier who was too sure of his success.

Twenty years later, Lully sets the legend of Phaeton to music, who wanted to drive his father's chariot Helios, the Sun, set the universe on fire and was struck down by Jupiter. As a shrewd courtier as he was a good musician, Lully insisted on making Phaeton an ambitious man and not a clumsy one. The Sun King attended all the performances: vengeance is a dish that is eaten cold ... Lyrical Tragedy favored the meaning of the words sung over pure vocal virtuosity, alternated singing, choirs and danced entertainment, played d ' sophisticated machinery. It was a marvel of balance between the arts, between affects and passions.

Because Phaeton is also a story of love and love of power. The Lyric Tragedy held out for two centuries, until the French Revolution and the fall of the monarchy.

En France, l’Opéra a toujours eu trait au Pouvoir. Son éclat reflète la puissance royale, et ce n’est pas un hasard si la Tragédie lyrique « à la française » naît à l’époque de Louis XIV. Mais quelqu’un a fait de l’ombre au Roi-Soleil : le surintendant Fouquet. Il a offert au roi une fête somptueuse en son château de Vaux. Son ascension fulgurante a rendu jaloux le roi qui fait emprisonner le financier trop assuré de sa réussite.

Vingt ans plus tard, Lully met en musique la légende de Phaéton, qui voulut conduire le char de son père Hélios, le Soleil, incendia l’univers et fut foudroyé par Jupiter. En courtisan aussi avisé qu’il était bon musicien, Lully tint à faire de Phaéton un ambitieux et non un maladroit. Le Roi-Soleil assista à toutes les représentations : la vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid… La Tragédie lyrique privilégiait le sens des paroles chantées à la pure virtuosité vocale, faisait alterner le chant, les chœurs et les divertissements dansés, jouait d’une machinerie sophistiquée. Ce fut une merveille d’équilibre entre les arts, entre les affects et les passions.

Car Phaéton est aussi une histoire d’amour et d’amour du pouvoir. La Tragédie lyrique tint bon pendant deux siècles, jusqu’à la Révolution française et à la chute de la monarchie.
