Petersburg is rightly called one of the main characters of P.I. Tchaikovsky "The Queen of Spades". The solemn and tragic beauty of the ceremonial views of the Northern capital determines the emotional structure of Alexander Titel's production. The key image of Sergei Barkhin's scenography is the majestic colonnade, disproportionately huge compared to human figures.

In this city invented by Peter, people live, tormented by strong passions. Fantastic events take place here, which are possible only in a dream or in a delusional hallucination. And in the music of Tchaikovsky, written in 1890, there is a prophecy of the coming cataclysms of the 20th century.

“What is The Queen of Spades about? Is this opera a love story? Partly. Actually, like any opera. Two men loved one girl. One is handsome, successful, from a good family, for whom all paths are open. And the other is a poor, unknown, evil loser. But the girl loves the second, which happens very often.

Is this opera a story about a game? I think no. Although the game occupies a very important place in it. You can even say that this is the story of two card games with a difference of 50 years. One - once in Versailles au jeu de la Reine. And the second - half a century later in St. Petersburg. Everything else is in between.

This is a story about terrible contradictions in the fate of people living in the city of tragic grandeur - St. Petersburg. He is also one of the main characters of the opera - a ghost town, a city of phenomenal beauty, built in just 200 years with an extraordinary and unprecedented scale; a disastrous city, because it was built on bones drowned in a swamp, absolutely European in architecture, and at the same time inhabited by Russian people. A city that periodically floods, and which became the birthplace of both the Golden and Silver Ages in Russian art ... ” (Alexander Titel)

Петербург по праву называют одним из главных героев оперы П.И. Чайковского «Пиковая дама». Торжественная и трагическая красота парадных видов Северной столицы определяет эмоциональный строй постановки Александра Тителя. Ключевым образом сценографии Сергея Бархина становится величественная колоннада, несоизмеримо огромная по сравнению с человеческими фигурами.

В этом выдуманном Петром городе живут люди, терзаемые сильными страстями. Здесь происходят фантастические события, которые возможны только во сне или в бредовой галлюцинации. А в музыке Чайковского, написанной в 1890 году, звучит пророчество грядущих катаклизмов XX века.

«О чем «Пиковая дама»? Является ли эта опера историей про любовь? Отчасти. Собственно, как любая опера. Двое мужчин любили одну девушку. Один – красивый, успешный, из хорошей семьи, для которого открыты все пути. И другой – бедный, неизвестный, злой неудачник. Но девушка любит второго, что бывает весьма часто.

Является ли эта опера историей про игру? Пожалуй, нет. Хотя игра занимает в ней очень важное место. Можно даже сказать, что это история двух карточных игр с разницей в 50 лет. Одна – некогда в Версале au jeu de la Reine. И вторая – полвека спустя в Петербурге. Все остальное – между.

Это история о страшных противоречиях в судьбах людей, живущих в городе трагического величия – Петербурге. Он тоже один из главных героев оперы – город-призрак, город феноменальной красоты, построенный всего за 200 лет с необычайным и небывалым размахом; гибельный город, поскольку построен на костях, утопленных в болоте, абсолютно европейский по архитектуре, и при этом населенный русскими людьми. Город, который периодически затопляет, и который стал родиной как Золотого, так и Серебряного века в русском искусстве…» (Александр Титель)
