»Casta Diva« – »Chaste Goddess«. With this famous cavatina, the priestess Norma commands the population to remain peaceful in the fight against the Roman occupiers. However, Norma herself is conf licted, having broken her vows and secretly being a lover and mother. She leads a double life, as do her lover, the Roman general Pollione, and the novice Adalgisa. All these dangerous secrets escalate into a drama of life, death, and the sacrifice of love in the face of conflicts over occupation and Roman supremacy. It is said that all weapons are fair game in war – even those that strike at the heart and destroy all that we love?

Bellini’s celebrated 1831 bel canto opera presents these conf licts in an extreme spectrum of emotion, with dramatic choral scenes, rituals and vocal fireworks from the three exceptional singers at the centre of this operatic thriller. Here, life and death, war and peace, love and duty are all at stake.

»Casta Diva« – »Keusche Göttin«. Mit dieser so berühmten Kavatine gebietet die Priesterin Norma der Bevölkerung Frieden im Kampf gegen die römischen Besatzer. In Norma selber aber tobt der Konf likt, da sie ihr Gelübde gebrochen hat und heimlich Liebende und Mutter ist. Sie führt ein Doppelleben, wie es auch ihr Liebhaber, der römische General Pollione, und die Novizin Adalgisa tun. All diese gefährlichen Geheimnisse spitzen sich vor den Konf likten um Besatzung und römische Vorherrschaft zu einem Drama um Leben, Tod und Liebesopfer zu. Man sagt, im Krieg seien alle Waffen erlaubt – auch die, die mitten ins Herz treffen und alles zerstören, was wir lieben?

Bellinis gefeierte Belcanto-Oper von 1831 präsentiert diese Konf likte in einem extremen Spektrum an Gefühlen, mit dramatischen Chorszenen, Ritualen und vokalem Feuerwerk der drei Ausnahmesänger im Zentrum dieses Opernthrillers. Hier geht es um Leben oder Tod, Krieg oder Frieden, Liebe oder Pf licht.
