Que Aleksandr Glazunov haya sido -según un veredicto unánime- un epígono de Chaikovski no dice nada positivo de su originalidad como compositor, pero a cambio nos permite disfrutar de dos grandes ballets románticos escritos en la gloriosa tradición de El lago de los cisnes. Sin ir más lejos, Raymonda -el primero y más célebre de ambos- se estrenó en el Teatro Mariinski de San Petersburgo en 1898 con coreografía del mismísimo Marius Petipa. El libreto -aunque esquemático y no demasiado imaginativo- posee la virtud de instigar una partitura coloreada por el contraste de los universos cruzado y sarraceno ligados a los dos pretendientes de la princesa titular de la obra. En su debut como directora y coreógrafa, Tamara Rojo ha reinventado el argumento de este gran ballet en una fastuosa producción que se inspira en Florence Nightingale y las mujeres que la acompañaron a asistir a los heridos durante la guerra de Crimea. En este nuevo escenario, Raymonda es una joven idealista que abandona en 1854 su vida acomodada en Londres para servir como enfermera en Crimea. Allí su corazón se enfrentara a un difícil trance, al tener que elegir entre dos apuestos pretendientes: un soldado inglés y un carismático líder otomano.

That Aleksandr Glazunov was considered –according to unanimous opinion - an epigone of Tchaikovsky is hardly flattering in regard to  his originality as a composer. Nonetheless, through him, we are able to enjoy two of the great Romantic ballets composed, in the glorious tradition of Swan Lake. Without going further, Raymonda –the first and most famous of the two - premiered at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg in 1898 with the choreography of Marius Petipa, no less.  Although the libretto is schematic and not particularly imaginative, it has the virtue of a score coloured by the contrasts between the Saracen and Crusaders, universes that are linked by the two suitors of the protagonist princess of the work. In her debut as director and choreographer, Tamara Rojo reinvents the story of this wonderful ballet in a lavish production based on Florence Nightingale and the women who accompanied her in caring for the wounded in the battle of Crimea. In this new setting, Raymonda is a young idealist who abandons her comfortable life in London in 1854 to serve as a nurse in Crimea. There, her heart is challenged, having to choose between two handsome suitors: an English soldier or a charismatic Ottoman leader.
