As court jester to the Duke of Mantua, Rigoletto is pleased that his pleasure-loving master is having a great time seducing fathers at his court, seducing their daughters and husbands their wives. The main thing is that he, Rigoletto, knows that his own daughter, whom he keeps hidden from the public in his house, is safe. But his overprotected Gilda is also caught in the duke's net! A bloody attempt on the life of the seducer seems to Rigoletto the only way out of the misery of his life, but his revenge fatally misses its mark.
In 1851, when Verdi based his sixteenth opera on Victor Hugo's politically bold drama "Le roi s'amuse", which was banned in France, he already suspected that he would create a real masterpiece with "Rigoletto": The opera marks the beginning of a new creative phase , which established Verdi's world fame.
