One of the most famous works of the great Italian master does not need to be introduced to our audience. Hugo's drama The King Amusing is for Verdi a real subject for depicting great passions, social criticism and tender paternal love. The main character, the court jester aka the male servant Rigoletto, is faced with a dilemma; to survive at all costs without financial damage in an immoral environment, not to look at the consequences of one's own servitude, or to stand up to resistance, as Count Monterone was able to do? Because in life, every action is paid for, sometimes very dearly, by the loss of the greatest treasure - in this story - the beloved daughter Gilda.

Jedno z najznámejších diel veľkého talianskeho majstra nemusíme nášmu divákovi predstavovať. Hugova dráma Kráľ sa zabáva je pre Verdiho skutočným námetom na zobrazenie veľkých vášní, spoločenskej kritiky a nežnej otcovskej lásky. Hlavný hrdina, dvorný šašo alias pánsky prisluhovač Rigoletto, je postavený pred dilemu; prežiť za každú cenu bez finančnej ujmy v nemravnom prostredí, nehľadieť na dôsledky vlastného prisluhovačstva, alebo sa postaviť na odpor, ako to dokázal gróf Monterone? Lebo v živote sa za každý čin platí, a to niekedy veľmi draho, stratou najväčšieho pokladu – v tomto príbehu – milovanej dcéry Gildy.

Eines der bekanntesten Werke des großen italienischen Meisters braucht man unseren Zuschauern nicht lange vorzustellen. Hugos Drama Le roi s’amuse diente Verdi als Vorlage für die Darstellung großer Leidenschaften, gesellschaftlicher Kritik und zärtlicher Vaterliebe. Die Hauptfigur, der Hofnarr und Hofschranze Rigoletto, gerät in ein Dilemma: soll er versuchen, um jeden Preis finanziell unbeschadet in einem unmoralischen Umfeld zu überleben, ungeachtet der Konsequenzen, die so ein lakaienhaftes und heuchlerisches Dasein mit sich bringen, oder soll er Widerstand leisten, so wie es Graf Monterone gewagt hat. Im Leben bezahlt man nämlich für alles, und der Preis ist nicht selten zu hoch, wie hier der Verlust der teuersten Person – seiner geliebten Tochter Gilda.
