What is humility? It is not the reverence for God, but the encounter with a leper, his pain, his fear and his decay, which leads Francis to the realization that humility also has a lot to do with love - and with overcoming one's own self.

Saint François d'Assise is the only opera ever written by composer Olivier Messiaen, a late work that has no equal. Just as the characters in the piece learn to trust in God, so here the conductor must trust in his musicians - the famous Birds' Concert alone consists of so many melodies that he cannot help but simply let the orchestra play.
